Ice climbing is the recreational activity of climbing
frozen ice that accumulates as a waterfall freezes.

distance. This is Mary-Michael on her very first ice climb.

Register early for your Ice Climbing Clinic!
(limited to 8 climbers). Your ice climbing experience begins with
the Free Orientation Meeting (open to the public - registration required) at 43 Powhatatan
Way in Hackettstown. Attendance at the Orientation is required to participate in Beginner
Clinic.
Free Orientation Meeting

Open to the public
Participants will learn how to size climbing boots, helmets, fit ice crampons, hold,
carry and swing the ice axe, and how to hike into the ice climbing site. You will
learn how to dress to stay warm while spending a day outside in the cold. We will
also cover layering for optimum warmth with the correct clothing materials as well
as cold weather tips for selecting high energy food and liquids.
Beginner Climbing Clinic

(Limited to 8 climbers)
Attendance at Orientation is required to participate in Beginner Clinic.
Participants will climb a frozen waterfall! This clinic will focus on learning all
the safety issues including protective gear, hazard recognition, cold weather protocol.
Gain confidence as you become familiar with the variations of stance, balance, and
the general principals of movement on ice with the use of crampons and ice tools.
Review of climbing knots, tying into the harness, belay techniques, safely lowering
your partner off the top of a climb in cold weather conditions will be covered.
Hikers / Photographers / Naturalists
We are also inviting Hikers/Photographers/Naturalists to register to hike to the ice wall. Capture it with photographs or just enjoy a social adventure
in the outdoors.
