Madison Hut Information 

The present-day hut is constructed on the site of the AMC's first high mountain hut, built in 1888. Madison Spring occupies a commanding setting above the sheer walls of Madison Gulf, with spectacular 360-degree views of the Presidentials, Kilkenny, and Pilot ranges. It's a great base for observing the fascinating alpine tundra environment, including geology and plant life.

  • Location: Between Mount Madison and Mount Adams
  • Elevation: 4,800'
  • Hike difficulty: Strenuous on a long, steep trail exposed to weather above treeline.
  • Adjacent huts: Lakes of the Clouds Hut, Carter Notch Hut
  • Classic beginning or ending to a hut-to-hut Presidential Range traverse.

Accommodations

  • Sleeps 52 in two coed bunkrooms.
  • Full service includes hearty dinner at 6 p.m. and breakfast at 7 a.m., mattress, pillow and three wool blankets on each bunk (bring linens or sleeping bag).
  • Resident staff available with trail information and weather reports.
  • Small retail store with safety items, snacks, souvenirs.
  • Informative displays and daily educational programs.

Lakes of the Clouds Hut Information

The highest and most popular hut in the chain, Lakes of the Clouds Hut is located on the southern shoulder of Mount Washington. This hut offers sweeping views, gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, and proximity to rare alpine flowers.

  • Location: Mount Washington
  • Elevation: 5,050 feet
  • Hike difficulty: Strenuous with steep, rocky terrain that's extremely exposed to weather above treeline.
  • Great base for exploring Mount Washington's fragile alpine zone

  • Sleeps 90 in coed bunkrooms.
  • Coed bunkrooms for six, eight, 12, or 15 people.
  • Full service includes hearty dinner and breakfast
